Gjellerup Kirke (Gjellerup Church)

Of the 2000 Danish churches, Gjellerup Church is the most interesing because of it's Latin inscription in the tympanon above a former door facing to the south. "In 1140 b.C. the church was founded in the honour of God." The inscription makes Gjellerup Church the oldest dated building in Denmark.

The church is consecrated to the Roman martyr Sct. Laurentius. Extensions: Southern nave app. 1500 - porch app. 1750 - tower app. 1500. Towering like a picturesque sight this ashlar stone church gives a tremendous impression, and yet it fits into the landscape in a natural way, now 850 years after the foundation. In the very beautiful cemetry is a monument of the master builder of the church is to be found.

The church office is open: 09:00-13:00. Contact +45 30 60 00 53.
