The Oceanarium contains a massive 4.5 million litres of water and more than 3000 fish, making it Northern Europe's biggest aquarium. With the aim to inform visitors about life in and around the North Sea, the Oceanarium is inaugurating a new concept called Expedition North Sea.
The Expedition takes you to seven different destinations on land, at sea and right to the bottom of the deepest part of the sea. There is a wide selection of creatures and plants from the North Sea on show and topics cover a varied range from underwater nature and animal life to sustainable exploitation of the seas.
The Oceanarium is an exciting place with activity areas where you can immerse yourself in the lives and activities of marine animals in their natural environment - from fierce catfish, playful seals and on to good-natured sunfish. You can get close to the fish by putting your hands directly on the seabed and even touch them in the touch pools. The largest of the touch pools contains different flatfish, small fish, starfish, crabs and sea urchins, and in the ray touch pool you can stroke a thornback or a giant turbot – if you dare. The way to the underwater world of the seals leads you through a glass tunnel from where you can study the seals at play right beside you.
The presentation is highly informative, leading to an understanding of the animals’ behaviour and living conditions, the marine environment and how a sustainable use of the ocean’s resources can be improved.
The daily feedings of both seals and fish, changing exhibitions, touch pools and an outdoor playground make the North Sea Oceanarium a fun day out for the whole family whilst staying in popular
North Jutland.
