Discover Wellness, Wildlife and Denmark's Cosiest Town
|
|
With its miles of sandy beaches and timeless, rolling forests and farmland, Denmark's clean, green East Jutland region offers the perfect setting for a relaxing, get-away-from-it-all break. The area's famously unspoilt landscape and unhurried pace of life immediately soothe visitors into a holiday frame of mind. One of East Jutland's most enduring destinations is the lovely town of Vejle, where visitors will find a range of attractions spanning golf, spa, shopping, beaches and even a protected wilderness to explore. Vejle and its immediate surroundings provide an endless array of wholesome things for visitors to experience - no matter how daringly active or indulgently lazy they choose to be!

Vejle itself is an attractive and historic town at the heart of an impossibly beautiful corner of the country known as Trekanten (or 'The Triangle'). The town itself was voted the cosiest in all of Denmark in a national poll conducted in 2010 and visitors won't take long to fall for its charms. Its name derives from an old Danish word for 'ford' (in recognition of its location at an important river crossing) and its history stretches as far back as the year 1100. Today, Vejle is known for its historic landmarks (including a hilltop windmill and a grand merchant's house) and vibrant shopping scene - especially along its pedestrianised central street, which offers 900m of big-name stores and quirky, independent shops.
Along the town's quaint side-streets there are with plenty of trendy cafés and excellent gourmet dining options at places such as the Aagaard Inn, which dates from 1777, or the idyllic Hopballe Mill which offers a moment of lunchtime respite for weary feet.

Retail therapy aside, there are plenty of other recreational opportunities to be found beyond the outskirts of town. Favourite pastimes include canoeing and sailing along the waterfront. For cyclists and hikers the Vejle Ådal river valley provides a scenic landscape of great natural beauty with routes marked out through the undulating countryside, meandering coastline, moorland and meadows. The area also has some of Denmark's most picturesque golf courses, while indulgent spa treatments at some of Vejle's many high-end wellness hotels (such as the palatial Comwell Kellers Park & Spa, the forest setting of the Munkebjerg Hotel or the historic manor house of Vejlefjord Kur & Spa) are also on offer should visitors so choose. Of course, the sun-kissed, sandy beaches along the pretty Vejle Inlet are also very tempting for a lazy afternoon when the weather is fine.

Creativity abounds in Vejle with the new wave-shaped apartment complex, Bølgen (The Wave) being the town’s latest architectural wonder, clad with shimmering glazed tiles. The bright, modern ambiance of the heritage textile mill, Spinderihallerne, is home to many creative businesses and the Vejle Art Museum showcases an inspiring collection of etchings, including 50 by Rembrandt.
For something a little more back-to-nature, just outside the town lies Kongens Kær wetland park, which has recently been upgraded with new nature trails and picnic areas to make it more user-friendly. Kongens Kær is well-known for its wildfowl (ducks, geese and grebes are among the feathered residents), but the most exciting avian attractions are the rare white-tailed eagles (Europe's largest birds of prey) that can sometimes be glimpsed as they hunt across these wild and wonderful wetlands.

Thanks to its relatively central location in the geographical centre of Denmark, Vejle is convenient for many of the country's signature attractions. The UNESCO listed monuments at Jelling are less than an hour away and the original LEGOLAND at Billund is also within easy reach. Whilst exotic animals roam free not far from Legoland on the Jutland ‘savannah’ at the family friendly safari park of Givskud Zoo.
