Hotel rates: CPH drops out of top 10 most expensive list

March 2011

According to the latest hotel survey from Hogg Robinson Group Plc (HRG), the international corporate travel services company, Copenhagen is no longer among the top 10 most expensive cities in the world. On the whole, the strongest increase in hotel rates across 2010 took place in Africa and Asia Pacific, whilst European hotel prices fell for the second consecutive year.

The average room rates in the top 10 most expensive cities vary significantly when compared to the same period in 2009 and several countries, incl. Denmark, have dropped out of the top rankings, with new additions from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Of the 75 cities included in the survey, the number 1 most expensive city is Moscow with an average hotel room rate of GBP 258.67 in 2010 (down 3% compared to 2009). In comparison, the average hotel room rate in Copenhagen is now GBP 163.47 in 2010 (down 11% compared to 2009).

Whereas Abu Dhabi, Manama, Milan, Copenhagen and Athens were listed in the 2009 top 10 most expensive cities, in 2010 they have been replaced by Zurich, Hong Kong, Stockholm, Doha and Riyadh. Copenhagen, which held an eight place in 2009, has dropped to number 22, and Abu Dhabi, which came second in 2009, dropped to number 19 in 2010. Stockholm has moved up to position 8 from 21 the year before.
